The third Friday of January, February, April, June, July, September, November, and December  finds society members
at The Missouri Botanical Garden for the monthly meeting of the Greater St.Louis Dahlia Society. The meetings
consist of  general society business old and new, and an education program given by different society members. Lots
of Q and A usually sparks a spirited discussion during and after the education program. Refreshments, provided by
members, and great conversation put an exclamation point on the evening.

  • The months of January and February find St. Louis dahlia growers waking up tubers and getting  ready to start
the propagation process for the coming season.
  • The months of April and May bring the major fund raisers for the Greater St.Louis Society. The intra-society
plant sale at the April  meeting, and on the 11th of May, the public plant sale at The Missouri Botanical Garden.
Society members donate propagated dahlia plants for sale to other members and the general public. Also for
sale are plenty of supplies to grow dahlias and other donated plants, annual and perennial flowers and plants
    ranging from vegetables to trees.
  • During June, July, and August most members and dahlia growers in general are very busy with their patches.
Whether its making sure the dahlias have plenty of water, shading them from the hot summer sun, pinching and
tying them up, or just administering general loving care. Greater St.Louis Dahlia Society members manage to
squeeze in some fun though. Their are judging seminars to attend, tours of other members gardens to take, and
the annual picnic and fish fry. August is also the start of the show season. There are local shows, shows at state
and county fairs, and also shows and exhibitions by all other societies affiliated with the American Dahlia Society.
  • September usually finds members of the Greater St.Louis Dahlia Society preparing for our crown jewel. The
annual Greater St.Louis Dahlia Society show and exhibition held at the Missouri Botanical Garden. It is a two day
event open to the public, but it is a week long event for the society members. Preparation for next years show
actually begins the day after this years show, and continues all year long.
  • In October there is a catered banquet and awards ceremony. Members celebrate triumphs at this years show
and set goals for the coming year. There are still plenty of blooms to show off also, and the banquet hall is
    usually filled with dahlia blooms.
  • By December all of the precious dahlia tubers have been dug and carefully put away to rest for winter, and
society members are dreaming of spring. We celebrate the holidays and the new year with a special monthly
meeting. Gift giving and every ones favorite holiday treats are in order.
